Musick Point
Musick Point is located on the Bucklands Beach Peninsula, 6 km east of Auckland City. Originally a Maori Pa (fortified village) site, it now houses a Radio station and golf course which offers a unique golfing experience with its magnificent views of Auckland's Hauraki Gulf.
On 22nd January 1836, William Thomas Fairburn a missionary, purchased 40,000 acres from the Maori people for 90 blankets, 24 adzes, 24 hoes, 14 spades, 80 Pounds, 900lbs of tobacco, 24 combs & 12 plain irons.
Musick Point Air Radio Station opened on January 12th 1942 and was originally operated by the NZ Post Office. Air Radio Civil Aviation Corp then took over, leaving the Post Office to handle all the maritime services. Telecom later used the building for Cellular Service.
Constructed in the shape of an aeroplane, the Musick Memorial Radio Station is not only named after, but also a tribute to American aviator Edwin C Musick, a pioneer of long distance ocean flying. Captain Edwin Musick piloted the first South Pacific survey flight from the USA to New Zealand. On 30 March 1937 he landed with his four-engined flying boat called the "Samoan Clipper" on the Auckland Harbour.
